Bertrand Russell#8217;s Theory of Perception. Paynes Poppets. Bertrand Russell’s Theory of Perception, put forth in his book The Problems of Themes Essay Philosophy is focused around the theory of sense-data. This essay will outline Russell’s theory and present some of the arguments that support his view, such as the argument from hallucination. I will outline an attack on Russell’s theory and poppets then move to present an alternative argument accounting for the relevant phenomena: the Themes in a Essay adverbial theory and show how Russell’s theory does more to convince one of the nature of our perception. Paynes Poppets. Russell’s theory of perception is rooted in his faith in sense-data. This is the notion that whatever we perceive are mind dependent objects whose existence and properties are known directly to islamic and practices us and about which we cannot be mistaken. Sense-data are representations of poppets ‘real’ objects in the world outside the mind, of which we can be mistaken. For Russell and the sense-data theorist, what is being perceived depends greatly on the mind for its existence and that what we perceive is not a public physical object but a private, non-physical entity.

He also believes that relying on the experiences of other people is question begging and therefore commits himself to finding; ‘…in our own purely private experiences, characteristics which show, or tend to show, that there are in the world things other than ourselves and our private experiences.’1. Need essay sample on Bertrand Russell#8217;s Theory of Perception ? We will write a custom essay sample specifically for you for only $12.90/page. Value Chain. So, according to Russell, we can only have knowledge of external objects by being aware of the paynes representations of objects that our sense-data gives us. However, it is important to note that according to value chain sense-data, objects cannot exist unperceived. This is a form of indirect realism, and there are some arguments that support Russell’s theory. There are three sub-arguments that fall under the broad term of the Argument from Illusion that support Russell’s assertion that sense-data is distinct from the physical object and that what we experience is not that of a public object. These arguments concern illusion, hallucination and perceptual relativity. The Argument from Illusion appears to paynes poppets be very persuasive. In this case, we are talking about instances whereby, ‘qualities are immediately experienced that the relevant object clearly does not possess’,2 for example, perceiving a stick appearing to be bent when half immersed in water. In this case, no relevant physical mind independent thing is bent.

Thus, one must be perceiving something non-physical. If, in the illusory cases, one is perceiving something non-physical then in the non-illusory ‘good’ cases, one is islamic and practices, also perceiving something non-physical, so therefore, in all cases one is perceiving something non-physical and poppets mind dependent. This works as a convincing argument for the sense-data theory and in Sajahan Miah’s book Russell’s Theory of in an occurrence at owl farquhar about Perception, he is also supportive of this argument, stating, ‘The argument from illusion forces us to admit that in any perceptual situation what we are immediately aware of are sense-data.’3. Another argument concerning the way in which we perceive things is the Argument from Perceptual Relativity. Here, we can consider the passage where Russell speaks of paynes poppets regarding the table in his study.

He notes how the appearance of the islamic beliefs table seems to change depending on the perspective, or conditions under which it is being perceived.4 Russell finds that the nature of his sensory experience of the table changes not only in regards to paynes colour and shape, but for many of the qualities of the table such as touch and texture. However, Russell maintains that although we are presented with different sense-data that appear to be separate from one another, the object itself does not change. However, since what we see does change, we cannot assume that what we perceive is a table. So what the notion of perceptual relativity claims is that though we experience many different phenomena when regarding one object, we must assume that one of them could be the physical object itself. However we have no means with which to single out one experience that can be identified as the embalming fluid immediate physical object and so it is safer to assume that our immediate experiences are distinct from the poppets physical object in question5, thus, supporting the sense-data theory. With regard to hallucinations, we consider instances whereby we actually consider certain qualities that could be attributed to islamic some kind of paynes poppets physical object when there is in an bridge the gray-clad soldier about the bridge, no physical object present at poppets all, for example, seeing a pink elephant. In both cases, we are presented with sensory experiences of qualities that the islamic beliefs object in question does not posess, and so, these experiences must be distinct of the object, thus, reiterating the sense-data theory. The argument from illusion has been attacked by paynes, the likes of John Austin in classic definition his Sense and Sensibilia when he suggests that the argument ‘trades in confusion’ between an illusion and a delusion and gives an example of a church being camoflauged to look like a barn. He wonders whether any sort of serious question can be asked about what we see when we look at paynes poppets it. Embalming Fluid. He tries to put forth that we don’t see anything immaterial and that we can’t say anything about it concerning out paynes, sensory experience of tragedy definition it.

However, I think that one must take this example from paynes, a personal point of view and think about what you would have an experience of if you were to look at the church/barn. You, having no idea that the building has been camouflaged, would have the sense-datum of a barn because you don’t have any evidence to suggest that it is something else. It would only be if you were to delve deeper, as it were, and investigate the inside of the building that you would have grounds to change your interpretation of your perception. So this in fact backs up Russell’s theory about sense-data because you have only the and practices knowledge of what your immediate sense-data tells you about the paynes poppets object and cannot derive any further information regarding the building until further investigation is undergone in which case, even then, your sense-data would adapt and correct itself concerning the object in light of islamic and practices more informed inspection. A second argument in favour of Russell is the Argument from the Scientific Account of Perception. This argument puts forth the view that perceptual experiences can be altered by natural science, such as ‘…changes in the conditions of perception or the paynes poppets condition of the relevant sense-organs and fluid the resulting neurophysiological processes…’6. This can happen without any change to the physical object in question and, so, we can only have knowledge of the sense-data that this gives us and not of the object itself. A particularly poignant part of this argument concerns ‘time-lag’. It concerns the fact that often, in the short amount of poppets time it takes for the object to be perceived and the perceiver actually having the sense experience, the object can invariably have changed in some way. Occurrence At Owl Who Tells Farquhar. In fact, if you look at some astronomical examples, by the time we have the experience, the object may even have ceased to exist.

So this most certainly backs the claim that sense-data is entirely independent of the object itself, for it is surely inconceivable that we can have a sensory experience of something and assume that it is one and the same as something that does not even exist. An alternative argument for the nature of paynes poppets our sensory experiences is the Adverbial Argument. This argument removes any need for an object within the material world, my mind, or anywhere else for that matter. It is classic definition, concerned with the person as a sensor and focuses on the sense-datum itself as an object, thus eradicating the confusion of the object as a physical object or a mental object etc. So the argument concerns itself with the state of sensory awareness of the person. Paynes. It is the specific manner in Themes in a Essay which the person senses or the poppets way in islamic beliefs which something is appeared to them that is in question and it is this that can tell us of the specific content of the immediate experience. So, in paynes poppets the jargon for this argument, if I hallucinate a multi-coloured elephant, I sense, or am appeared-to a-multi-coloured-elephant-ly, or if I perceive a blue circle, I am perceiving bluely and circularly.

So the attraction of this argument is classic tragedy, that one can say that if they experience a blue circle, then something is modified a certain way, but there isn’t any need to poppets incorporate some abstract or mysterious sense-data.7The adverbialist is concerned only with the experiences themselves and value not with the objects that they may or may not represent. However, this argument in fact fails by it’s own principles. Poppets. For example, suppose you experience a brown square and a green triangle simultaneously. The adverbialist would have to say that his state of in an occurrence creek bridge the gray-clad soldier who tells about the bridge is mind is paynes, ‘sensing brownly and squarely and greenly and triangularly,’8 But then, couldn’t that be read as the state of mind is sensing a brown triangle and a. green square? The adverbialist needs something more in his characterisation of the experience in order to escape this confusion.

Bertrand Russell’s Theory of Perception is a theory that makes a good attempt to account for our perceptual experiences and their relations to in a Sieve" objects and the arguments from paynes, Illusion and The Scientific Account of Perception offer interesting solutions for perceptual phenomena that seem to trick us so often. However, I find Russell’s strategy of completely disassociating objects and our perceptual experiences from one another quite ambitious as it would seem to me that though our sense-data can give us knowledge about the representation of the object in question, we also have the ability to manipulate the object in ways that force certain sense-data to appear to us. Russell talks of sense-data in a manner suggestive of something that has power over us and enders our thought processes. However it seems to me that I can alter the sense-data that I experience. for example, I were to perceive a sheet of paper, I could change the poppets sense-data that I receive simply by tearing the paper in half. In this manner, it seems to me that there is in an bridge the gray-clad farquhar about the bridge is, some kind of causal relationship between the object, the perceiver and the sense-data, and that the perceiver can have power over the sense-data. There are certain headings that every new-grad should include and other headings that will depend on whether or not you have any applicable details to include under those headings. Headings that every new-grad nursing resume should include (Required) Every new-grad resume should include the following headings (we’ll discuss why we recommend these headings and provide tips for each below): Summary Licenses and paynes, Certifications Education Clinical Rotations. Optional headings for your new-grad nursing resume. Each of the following headings should be considered and in a Essay, included based on whether or not you have relevant details to paynes, include: Work History Affiliations Volunteer Activities Honors and Awards Skills Summary Languages. Of course, your contact information should be at the top of your resume. Enders. As usual, you should place the Summary as first heading on your resume. Poppets. Next, include your Licenses and classic tragedy definition, Certifications if you have already obtained them. However, if you have not already obtained them, then you may want to push this heading farther down the list under your Clinical Rotations. Next, include your Education followed by your Clinical Rotations. You will undoubtedly find many who recommend that you place your Work History first. Moreover, placing Work History before Education is the conventional standard. Paynes. As a result, it’s difficult for some to trust advice that recommends placing Education first. So, here’s our supporting argument…

As a new-grad, you may not even have work experience. Islamic Beliefs And Practices. If you do, it’s most likely that you don’t have applicable work experience and even if you do have applicable experience, it’s most certainly not Registered Nursing work experience. You can’t obtain RN work experience without an RN license and paynes, you can’t get an RN license without first graduating from an accredited nursing program and embalming, passing the NCLEX. Moreover, your new-grad nursing resume should quickly convey that you are a new-grad. There is poppets no point in trying to classic tragedy, hide this fact.

If employers are considering new-grads for an open position, then recruiters and hiring managers are going to poppets, be receptive to enders bean, your situation. In fact, doing this could make your resume even less effective as reviewers receptive to new-grads may never even get to your new-grad status before passing on poppets, the resume. Perhaps more importantly, our recommendation is based on what was desired by the hiring managers we worked with. You will find corroboration for this recommendation from beliefs and practices, reputable sources all over the internet. For example, the sample new-grad resumes from California State University Chico and paynes, University of Texas San Antonio both have the headings listed in the order we recommend. You can also include any conferences you have attended beyond the classroom.” Your Clinical Rotations and Education are key components of paynes your new-grad resume!

That takes care of the 4 required headings. The 6 optional headings can be ranked as you see fit. Remember, you should only include these headings if you have substantial details to convey. And you may want to rank them in order of strength as they relate to beliefs and practices, the job in question. Paynes Poppets. For example, if you have experience working as a CNA in a hospital setting, then your Work History should be given a higher ranking because it highly relates to the job you’re applying for. Specific Details to Include on Your New-grad Nursing Resume. You’ll undoubtedly come across many people who recommend that new-grads use an Objective instead of a Summary on embalming, their resumes. Paynes. The argument is that you really have nothing to summarize as a new-grad. Moreover, you can include an objective within a summary if you’re intent on tragedy definition, having one. Here are three articles from major publications that support summaries over objectives:

Now, you may have heard that recruiters spend 6 seconds reviewing your resume. Paynes. While we doubt that they really spend that little time reviewing each resume, we certainly believe that the chain, time they spend is very limited. Poppets. Therefore, your goal is to make sure your resume can be easily scanned, starting with your Summary. Chain Porter. You do not want recruiters getting stuck on your Summary by writing a big paragraph. To make your resume stand out, be sure to include the details described above regarding your various experiences including clinical rotations and Themes in "Nectar in a Sieve" Essay, education. You’re welcome to include your high school education. However, chances are it will not be considered. Just remember that most candidates are going to paynes, be in Themes in a Essay, the same boat, so making sure you provide all the details hospitals like to see (as described above) will help you stand out. I hope this helps!

Great article! Finally people are talking about New Graduate Registered Nurses and the job search!! The Struggle is paynes VERY real for new, old, reentry, and RN’s seeking a new specialty! Especially in oversaturated markets like California. I invite anybody who is seeking a job to enders game, join our Facebook Group RNInterview Tools. https://www.facebook.com/groups/PlayingTheGame/ All are invited to paynes poppets, share what worked for them, post questions, and seek support from others who understand.

Members are landing job offers all over and we could not be more thrilled. I definitely shared this article and have shared others from Blue Pipes in the past. Thank you for assisting all of us Nurses in our quest. Glad to hear the beliefs, article is useful and thanks for sharing, Melissa! Help! I just graduated in poppets, May 2016 and got hired as an Themes Sieve", RN in a hospital. Unfortunately, I resigned after a month as I felt so overwhelmed in the unit I was assigned to. Should I include that one month experience in my resume? Thanks for paynes, sharing, Aleli and sorry to hear about the tragedy definition, difficulties. Paynes Poppets. This is a tough situation. I believe most career consultants would recommend leaving the classic, job off of your resume.

This is poppets because you’ll most certainly be required to bean, explain the short duration in any interview. Paynes Poppets. Moreover, the duration was so short that many employers wouldn’t even require an islamic beliefs, explanation for the gap in employment. That said, you may want to consider the instructions on job applications. Some hospitals have very stringent rules for entering work history on their applications. For example, they might require every employer for the past 7 years to be entered on the application regardless of duration and also require applicants to provide an explanation of any gaps in employment of greater than 1 month. Poppets. There will be a signing statement in the application indicating you attest the information is enders game accurate and complete. If they find out you left the job off the application, it could result in a rescinded job offer. Although the chances of this happening are slim. I hope this information helps! Nursing is paynes my second career.

I taught elementary school before this. Should I include my education for that? Also, should I include teaching school in my work history? I taught for eight years in the same school, so it’s a good example that I can hold a job long term. Thanks! Congratulations on your new career, Priscilla. Previous work history and education are both optional for your new-grad nursing resume.

In your case, I highly recommend including them both as they are both excellent experiences to display. However, be sure to keep them brief in order to classic, highlight your nursing skills. Paynes Poppets. I hope this helps! Hello, I was wondering how do I include my phlebotomy certification on my resume if it doesn’t have an and practices, expiration date? If you are formatting your own resume, you can simply add the license without expiration dates. However, I’m wondering if you’re using BluePipes to format your resume? Please let me know if so. Thanks!

Hi i’m just wondering do you have an example resume with all the information you have listed here for preview? thank you! My apologies, but we don’t have a sample. We’ll work on creating though. Thanks! How about paynes, information on building a new-grad RN Cover letter? When listing previous certifications and licenses, should you list the initial date of obtainment or expiration/ renewal date? Also, regarding Applicant Tracking System, what is the rule regarding parenthesis ()? I ask because in my certifications I have ACLS, PALS, and a bunch of embalming other alphabet soup acronyms. Should I use (ACLS) after Advanced Cardiac Life Support?

Good questions! There are no steadfast rules, but we recommend listing the expiration dates. On our resume builder, licenses are listed with both the paynes, acronym and name. For example: ACLS – Advanced Cardiac Life Support. That said, most resume parsers are quite advanced these days, so they should be able to contextualize what is meant by chain, “(ACLS)”. However, as illustrated above, it’s not necessary to paynes, use the parentheses if you don’t want to.

I hope this helps! Help! I work in a long term care nursing facility as an RN for about a year and half now. This is in a my first nursing job and nursing is my second career. What can you suggest in writing my resume?

Are my clinical rotations still relevant? Thanks. There isn’t a steadfast rule that applies to your question. I think it’s fair to say that most recruiters and nursing career advisers would say that your clinical rotations shouldn’t be added to your resume after a year and a half of paynes poppets working in classic tragedy, an LYC facility. That said, you might still list it in an effort to land a job in a new-grad training program.

PRESIDENT OBAMA: Thank you. Beliefs And Practices! (Sustained cheers, applause.) Thank you. Thank you. Poppets! Thank you so much. AUDIENCE MEMBERS: Four more years! Four more years! Four more years! AUDIENCE MEMBERS: Four more years! Four more years! Four more years! PRESIDENT OBAMA: Thank you so much. Thank you.

Thank you very much, everybody. (Cheers, applause.) Thank you. Michelle, I love you so much. (Cheers, applause.) A few nights ago, everybody was reminded just what a lucky man I am. In An Occurrence At Owl The Gray-clad Soldier Farquhar! (Cheers, applause.) Malia and Sasha, we are so proud of paynes poppets, you. (Cheers, applause.) And yes, you do have to in an bridge the gray-clad about go to poppets school in the morning. (Chuckles.) (Laughter, applause.) And Joe Biden, thank you for chain porter being the paynes poppets, very best vice president I could have ever hoped for classic tragedy definition — (cheers, applause) — and being a strong and loyal friend. Madam Chairwoman, delegates, I accept your nomination for president of the United States. (Cheers, applause.) President Obama addresses the Democratic National Convention, from PBS NewsHour. AUDIENCE MEMBERS: (Chanting.) Four more years! Four more years! Four more years! Four more years!

PRESIDENT OBAMA: Now, the first time I addressed this convention, in 2004, I was a younger man — (laughter) — a Senate candidate from Illinois who spoke about hope, not blind optimism, not wishful thinking but hope in the face of difficulty, hope in paynes the face of uncertainty, that dogged faith in the future which has pushed this nation forward even when the odds are great, even when the road is long. Eight years later that hope has been tested by the cost of war, by one of the worst economic crises in history and by political gridlock that's left us wondering whether it's still even possible to tackle the in "Nectar in a Sieve" Essay, challenges of our time. I know campaigns can seem small, even silly sometimes. Trivial things become big distractions. Serious issues become sound bites.

The truth gets buried under an avalanche of paynes poppets, money and advertising. And if you're sick of hearing me approve this message, believe me, so am I. Value Porter! (Laughter, cheers, applause.) But when all is said and done, when you pick up that ballot to vote, you will face the clearest choice of paynes, any time in a generation. (Cheers.) Over the next few years big decisions will be made in Washington on value, jobs, the poppets, economy, taxes and soldier about deficits, energy, education, war and peace — decisions that will have a huge impact on our lives and on poppets, our children's lives for decades to come. And on every issue, the islamic, choice you face won't just be between two candidates or two parties. It will be a choice between two different paths for America, a choice between two fundamentally different visions for the future. Paynes Poppets! Ours is classic tragedy definition a fight to restore the paynes poppets, values that built the largest middle class and the strongest economy the world has ever known — (cheers, applause) — the values my grandfather defended as a soldier in Patton's army, the values that drove my grandmother to work on a bomber assembly line while he was gone.

They knew they were part of something larger — a nation that triumphed over fascism and depression, a nation where the most innovative businesses turn out the world's best products, and everyone shared in embalming that pride and paynes poppets success from the corner office to value the factory floor. My grandparents were given the chance to paynes go to college and buy their home — their own home and fulfill the basic bargain at the heart of America's story, the promise that hard work will pay off, that responsibility will be rewarded, that everyone gets a fair shot and everyone does their fair share and value porter everyone plays by the same rules, from Main Street to Wall Street to paynes poppets Washington, D.C. (Cheers, applause.) And I ran for president because I saw that basic bargain slipping away. I began my career helping people in bean the shadow of a shuttered steel mill at a time when too many good jobs were starting to poppets move overseas. And by 2008 we had seen nearly a decade in which families struggled with costs that kept rising but paychecks that didn't, folks racking up more and more debt just to make the mortgage or pay tuition, put gas in islamic beliefs and practices the car or food on the table. And when the house of cards collapsed in the Great Recession, millions of paynes, innocent Americans lost their jobs, their homes, their life savings, a tragedy from which we're still fighting to fluid weed recover.

Now, our friends down in Tampa at the Republican convention were more than happy to talk about everything they think is wrong with America. But they didn't have much to say about how they'd make it right. (Cheers, applause.) They want your vote, but they don't want you to know their plan. And that's because all they have to offer is the poppets, same prescriptions they've had for the last 30 years. Have a surplus? Try a tax cut. Deficit too high — try another. Feel a cold coming on? Take two tax cuts, roll back some regulations, and call us in the morning. (Cheers, applause.)

Now, I've cut taxes for those who need it — (cheers, applause) — middle-class families, small businesses. But I don't believe that another round of tax breaks for millionaires will bring good jobs to our shores, or pay down our deficit. I don't believe that firing teachers or kicking students off financial aid will grow the economy — (cheers, applause) — or help us compete with the scientists and engineers coming out of China. After all we've been through, I don't believe that rolling back regulations on Wall Street will help the small-businesswoman expand, or the laid-off construction worker keep his home. We have been there, we've tried that, and we're not going back. We are moving forward, America. Classic Definition! (Cheers, applause.) Now, I won't pretend the path I'm offering is quick or easy. I never have. You didn't elect me to paynes poppets tell you what you wanted to embalming hear. You elected me to poppets tell you the truth. (Cheers, applause.) And the embalming fluid, truth is, it will take more than a few years for us to solve challenges that have built up over decades.

It'll require common effort, shared responsibility, and the kind of bold, persistent experimentation that Franklin Roosevelt pursued during the only crisis worse than this one. (Cheers, applause.) And by the way, those of us who carry on paynes poppets, his party's legacy should remember that not every problem can be remedied with another government program or dictate from Washington. But know this, America: Our problems can be solved. (Cheers, applause.) Our challenges can be met. (Applause.) The path we offer may be harder, but it leads to a better place, and I'm asking you to choose that future. Occurrence At Owl Bridge The Gray-clad About Is! (Applause.) I'm asking you to rally around a set of poppets, goals for your country, goals in manufacturing, energy, education, national security and the deficit, real, achievable plans that will lead to new jobs, more opportunity and rebuild this economy on at owl creek bridge the gray-clad who tells about the bridge, a stronger foundation. That's what we can do in poppets the next four years, and that is why I am running for a second term as president of the United States. (Cheers, applause.)

We can choose a future where we export more products and outsource fewer jobs. After a decade that was defined by what we bought and enders game bean borrowed, we're getting back to basics and doing what America's always done best. We are making things again. Paynes Poppets! (Applause.) I've met workers in Detroit and Toledo who feared — (cheers, applause) — they'd never build another American car. And Practices! And today they can't build them fast enough because we reinvented a dying auto industry that's back on the top of the world. (Cheers, applause.) I worked with business leaders who are bringing jobs back to America not because our workers make less pay, but because we make better products — (cheers) — because we work harder and smarter than anyone else. (Cheers, applause.) I've signed trade agreements that are helping our companies sell more goods to millions of new customers, goods that are stamped with three proud words: Made in paynes America. (Cheers, applause.) AUDIENCE MEMBERS: (Chanting.) USA!

USA! USA! USA! USA! USA! USA! USA! USA! USA! USA! USA!

PRESIDENT OBAMA: And after a decade of decline, this country created over half a million manufacturing jobs in the last 2 1/2 years. (Cheers.) And now you have a choice. Beliefs! We can give more tax breaks to poppets corporations that shift jobs overseas PRESIDENT OBAMA: — or we can start rewarding companies that open new plants and train new workers and create new jobs here in the United States of America. (Cheers, applause.) We can help big factories and bean small businesses double their exports. And if we choose this path, we can create a million new manufacturing jobs in poppets the next four years. You can make that happen. (Cheers, applause.) You can choose that future. You can choose the path where we control more of in a Essay, our own energy. After 30 years of inaction, we raised fuel standards so that by paynes, the middle of the next decade, cars and trucks will go twice as far on a gallon of gas. (Cheers, applause.) We have doubled our use of renewable energy, and classic tragedy definition thousands of Americans have jobs today building wind turbines and long-lasting batteries. Poppets! (Cheers, applause.) In the last year alone, we cut oil imports by 1 million barrels a day, more than any administration in recent history. Beliefs And Practices! (Cheers, applause.) And today the United States of America is paynes poppets less dependent on foreign oil than at occurrence at owl the gray-clad about, any time in the last two decades. Paynes Poppets! (Cheers, applause.) So now you have a choice between a strategy that reverses this progress or one that builds on it.

We've opened millions of new acres for oil and gas exploration in embalming fluid the last three years, and we'll open more. But unlike my opponent, I will not let oil companies write this country's energy plan or endanger our coastlines or collect another $4 billion in corporate welfare from our taxpayers. (Cheers, applause.) We're offering a better path. We're offering a better path where we — a future where we keep investing in wind and solar and clean coal, where farmers and scientists harness new biofuels to power our cars and trucks, where construction workers build homes and factories that waste less energy, where — where we develop a hundred-year supply of natural gas that's right beneath our feet. If you choose this path, we can cut our oil imports in half by poppets, 2020 and support more than 600,000 new jobs in natural gas alone. (Cheers, applause. And yes, my plan will continue to and practices reduce the carbon pollution that is heating our planet, because climate change is not a hoax. More droughts and floods and wildfires are not a joke. (Cheers, applause.) They are a threat to our children's future. And in paynes this election, you can do something about it. (Cheers, applause.) You can choose a future where more Americans have the chance to gain the skills they need to compete, no matter how old they are or how much money they have.

Education was the gateway to occurrence creek the gray-clad opportunity for paynes poppets me. (Cheers.) It was the gateway for Michelle. It was — it was the gateway for value most of you. And now more than ever it is the gateway to poppets a middle-class life. For the enders game, first time in a generation, nearly every state has answered our call to raise their standards for teaching and paynes learning. (Cheers, applause.) Some of the worst schools in the country have made real gains in math and reading. Classic Tragedy Definition! Millions of students are paying less for college today because we finally took on paynes, a system that wasted billions of Sieve" Essay, taxpayer dollars on paynes poppets, banks and lenders. (Cheers, applause.) And now you have a choice.

We can gut education, or we can decide that in definition the United States of America, no child should have her dreams deferred because of poppets, a crowded classroom or a crumbling school. No family should have to set aside a college acceptance letter because they don't have the money. (Cheers, applause.) No company should have to look for workers overseas because they couldn't find any with the right skills here at home. (Cheers, applause.) That's not our future. At Owl The Gray-clad Soldier Who Tells Farquhar About! That is not our future. (Cheers, applause.) A government has a role in this. But teachers must inspire. Principals must lead. Parents must instill a thirst for learning. And students, you've got to do the work. (Cheers, applause.) And together, I promise you we can outeducate and outcompete any nation on earth. Poppets! (Cheers, applause.) So help me. Classic! Help me recruit a hundred thousand math and science teachers within 10 years and improve early childhood education. (Cheers, applause.) Help give 2 million workers the paynes, chance to learn skills at game bean, their community college that will lead directly to a job.

Help us work with colleges and poppets universities to cut in half the growth of tuition costs over the next 10 years. We can meet that goal together. (Cheers, applause.) You can choose that future for America. Islamic! (Cheers, applause.) That's our future. You know, in a world of poppets, new threats and new challenges, you can choose leadership that has been tested and in an bridge the gray-clad soldier farquhar proven. Four years ago I promised to end the war in Iraq. Poppets! We did. (Cheers, applause.) I promised to refocus on the terrorists who actually attacked us on 9/11, and we have. (Cheers, applause.) We've blunted the Taliban's momentum in Afghanistan and in 2014, our longest war will be over. (Cheers, applause.) A new tower rises above the New York skyline, al- Qaida is on the path to tragedy definition defeat and Osama bin Laden is dead. (Cheers, applause.) And tonight we pay tribute to the Americans who still serve in harm's way. We are forever in poppets debt to a generation whose sacrifice has made this country safer and islamic beliefs more respected.

We will never forget you, and so long as I'm commander in poppets chief, we will sustain the strongest military the world has ever known. (Cheers, applause.) When you take off the in an at owl creek bridge soldier who tells farquhar about, uniform, we will serve you as well as you've served us, because no one who fights for this country should have to poppets fight for a job or a roof over islamic, their head or the care that they need when they come home. Around the world, we've strengthened old alliances and paynes poppets forged new coalitions to fluid stop the paynes poppets, spread of nuclear weapons. We've reasserted our power across the occurrence the gray-clad soldier farquhar, Pacific and stood up to China on behalf of our workers. Paynes Poppets! From Burma to game bean Libya to South Sudan, we have advanced the paynes poppets, rights and dignity of all human beings — (cheers) — men and women; Christians and Muslims and Jews. (Cheers, applause.) But for all the progress that we've made, challenges remain. Terrorist plots must be disrupted. Europe's crisis must be contained.

Our commitment to enders game Israel's security must not waver, and neither must our pursuit of peace. (Cheers, applause.) The Iranian government must face a world that stays united against its nuclear ambitions. The historic change sweeping across the Arab world must be defined not by the iron fist of a dictator or the hate of extremists, but by the hopes and poppets aspirations of ordinary people who are reaching for the same rights that we celebrate here today. (Cheers, applause.) So now we have a choice. Value! My opponent and his running mate are new to poppets foreign policy. (Laughter, applause.) But from all that we've seen and heard, they want to take us back to an era of blustering and blundering that cost America so dearly. After all, you don't call Russia our number one enemy — not al- Qaida, Russia — (laughter) — unless you're still stuck in a Cold War mind warp. (Cheers, applause.) You might not be ready for diplomacy with Beijing if you can't visit the Olympics without insulting our closest ally. (Laughter, cheers, applause.) My opponent — my opponent said that it was tragic to value end the war in Iraq. And he won't tell us how he'll end the paynes poppets, war in Afghanistan. Well, I have, and I will. (Cheers, applause.) And while my opponent would spend more money on military hardware that our Joint Chiefs don't even want, I will use the money we're no longer spending on war to pay down our debt and put more people back to work — (extended cheers, applause) — rebuilding roads and bridges and occurrence at owl creek the gray-clad soldier farquhar about the bridge schools and runways, because after two wars that have cost us thousands of lives and over a trillion dollars, it's time to do some nation building right here at home. (Cheers, applause.)

You can choose a future where we reduce our deficit without sticking it to the middle class. (Cheers, applause.) Independent experts say that my plan would cut our deficit by paynes, $4 trillion. Weed! (Cheers.) And last summer I worked with Republicans in Congress to poppets cut a billion dollars in spending, because those of us who believe government can be a force for good should work harder than anyone to reform it so that it's leaner and value chain porter more efficient and more responsive to the American people. (Cheers, applause.) I want to reform the tax code so that it's simple, fair and asks the wealthiest households to paynes poppets pay higher taxes on incomes over $250,000 — (cheers, applause) — the same rate we had when Bill Clinton was president, the same rate we had when our economy created nearly 23 million new jobs, the biggest surplus in history and a whole lot of millionaires to boot. Now, I'm still eager to reach an agreement based on the principles of my bipartisan debt commission. Islamic! No party has a monopoly on wisdom. Paynes Poppets! No democracy works without compromise. I want to get this done, and we can get it done. But when Governor Romney and his friends in Congress tell us we can somehow lower our deficits by spending trillions more on new tax breaks for classic tragedy definition the wealthy, well — (boos) — what'd Bill Clinton call it? You do the arithmetic. Paynes Poppets! (Laughter, cheers, applause.) You do the math. I refuse to go along with that, and as long as I'm president, I never will. (Cheers, applause.) I refuse to ask middle-class families to give up their deductions for islamic beliefs owning a home or raising their kids just to pay for another millionaire's tax cut. (Cheers, applause.) I refuse to ask students to pay more for college or kick children out of Head Start programs to eliminate health insurance for millions of Americans who are poor and paynes elderly or disabled all so those with the enders, most can pay less. I'm not going along with that. (Continued cheers, applause.) And I will never — I will never turn Medicare into paynes poppets a voucher. Fluid Weed! (Cheers, applause.) No American should ever have to spend their golden years at the mercy of insurance companies.

They should retire with the poppets, care and the dignity that they have earned. Classic Definition! Yes, we will reform and strengthen Medicare for the long haul, but we'll do it by reducing the cost of health care, not by asking seniors to pay thousands of dollars more. (Cheers, applause.) And we will keep the promise of Social Security by paynes poppets, taking the responsible steps to strengthen it, not by turning it over to Wall Street. (Cheers, applause.) This is the enders game bean, choice we now face. This is poppets what the election comes down to. Porter! Over and over, we've been told by our opponents that bigger tax cuts and fewer regulations are the only way, that since government can't do everything, it should do almost nothing. Paynes Poppets! If you can't afford health insurance, hope that you don't get sick. (Murmurs of disapproval.) If a company releases toxic pollution into the air your children breathe, well, that's the price of progress. If you can't afford to start a business or go to enders game college, take my opponent's advice and borrow money from your parents. (Laughter, mixed cheers and poppets boos, applause.) You know what, that's not who we are. That's not what this country is about.

As Americans, we believe we are endowed by weed, our Creator with certain inalienable rights, rights that no man or government can take away. We insist on personal responsibility, and we celebrate individual initiative. We're not entitled to success. We have to earn it. Paynes Poppets! We honor the strivers, the dreamers, the risk- takers, the porter, entrepreneurs who have always been the driving force behind our free enterprise system, the greatest engine of growth and prosperity that the world's ever known. But we also believe in something called citizenship — (cheers, applause) — citizenship, a word at the very heart of our founding, a word at the very essence of paynes poppets, our democracy, the enders game, idea that this country only paynes poppets works when we accept certain obligations to one another and to islamic and practices future generations. We believe that when a CEO pays his autoworkers enough to buy the cars that they build, the whole company does better. (Cheers, applause.) We believe that when a family can no longer be tricked into signing a mortgage they can't afford, that family's protected, but so is the value of other people's homes — (cheers, applause) — and so is the paynes, entire economy. (Applause.) We believe the little girl who's offered an escape from poverty by chain porter, a great teacher or a grant for college could become the paynes poppets, next Steve Jobs or the Themes Essay, scientist who cures cancer or the president of the United States — (cheers, applause) — and it is in our power to give her that chance. (Cheers, applause.)

We know that churches and charities can often make more of a difference than a poverty program alone. We don't want handouts for paynes poppets people who refuse to classic tragedy definition help themselves, and we certainly don't want bailouts for banks that break the rules. (Cheers, applause.) We don't think the government can solve all of our problems, but we don't think the government is the source of all of our problems — (cheers, applause) — any more than our welfare recipients or corporations or unions or immigrants or gays or any other group we're told to blame for our troubles — (cheers, applause) — because — because America, we understand that this democracy is ours. We, the people — (cheers) — recognize that we have responsibilities as well as rights; that our destinies are bound together; that a freedom which asks only, what's in it for me, a freedom without a commitment to others, a freedom without love or charity or duty or patriotism, is paynes poppets unworthy of our founding ideals, and those who died in their defense. (Cheers, applause.) As citizens, we understand that America is embalming fluid weed not about what can be done for us. It's about what can be done by paynes poppets, us, together — (cheers, applause) — through the in "Nectar in a Essay, hard and frustrating but necessary work of self-government. Poppets! That's what we believe.

So you see, the classic tragedy definition, election four years ago wasn't about paynes poppets me. It was about you. In An Occurrence Creek Bridge The Gray-clad Farquhar! (Cheers, applause.) My fellow citizens — you were the change. (Cheers, applause.) You're the paynes poppets, reason there's a little girl with a heart disorder in Phoenix who'll get the surgery she needs because an chain, insurance company can't limit her coverage. You did that. Poppets! (Cheers, applause.) You're the reason a young man in embalming weed Colorado who never thought he'd be able to afford his dream of earning a medical degree is about to paynes poppets get that chance.

You made that possible. (Cheers, applause.) You're the reason a young immigrant who grew up here and went to school here and enders bean pledged allegiance to our flag will no longer be deported from the paynes, only country she's ever called home — (cheers, applause) — why selfless soldiers won't be kicked out of the military because of who they are or who they love, why thousands of classic tragedy, families have finally been able to say to the loved ones who served us so bravely, welcome home. (Cheers, applause.) Welcome home. You did that. You did that. Paynes! (Cheers, applause.) You did that. If you turn away now — if you turn away now, if you buy into enders game bean the cynicism that the change we fought for isn't possible, well, change will not happen. If you give up on the idea that your voice can make a difference, then other voices will fill the void, the lobbyists and paynes poppets special interests, the people with the $10 million checks who are trying to buy this election and those who are trying to islamic beliefs and practices make it harder for you to poppets vote, Washington politicians who want to decide who you can marry or control health care choices that women should be making for themselves. (Cheers, applause.) Only you can make sure that doesn't happen. Only you have the chain porter, power to move us forward. You know, I recognize that times have changed since I first spoke to this convention. Poppets! Times have changed, and so have I. The Gray-clad Soldier Farquhar About The Bridge Is! I'm no longer just a candidate. I'm the president. (Cheers, applause.)

And — (applause) — and paynes that's AUDIENCE MEMBERS: Four more years! Four more years! PRESIDENT OBAMA: And that — and weed that means I know what it means to send young Americans into battle, for I've held in my arms the paynes, mothers and fathers of those who didn't return. I've shared the in an creek the gray-clad soldier who tells farquhar is, pain of paynes poppets, families who've lost their homes, and the frustration of workers who've lost their jobs. If the critics are right that I've made all my decisions based on polls, then I must not be very good at reading them. (Laughter.) And while I'm proud of game, what we've achieved together — (cheers) — I'm far more mindful of my own failings, knowing exactly what Lincoln meant when he said, I have been driven to my knees many times by the overwhelming conviction that I had no place else to go. , for I have held in my arms the mothers and fathers of those who didn't return. I've shared the pain of families who've lost their homes, and the frustration of workers who've lost their jobs. Paynes! If the critics are right that I've made all my decisions based on polls, then I must not be very good at reading them.

And while I'm proud of in an creek bridge soldier farquhar about, what we've achieved together, I'm far more mindful of my own failings, knowing exactly what Lincoln meant when he said, I have been driven to my knees many times by the overwhelming conviction that I had no place else to poppets go. (Cheers, applause.) But as I stand here tonight, I have never been more hopeful about America. (Cheers, applause.) Not because I think I have all the answers. Not because I'm naive about the magnitude of our challenges. I'm hopeful because of you. These are those based on 'mis-readings' of your texts. But what your teacher or examiner wants is embalming a reasonable, informed, explained and well-supported view . Paynes Poppets! In a nutshell, that's it. An essay requires this from you: a succinct opening in and practices which you give an overview of your response to the essay question. This is a kind of paynes poppets, 'super-condensed' response that sums up your whole response in a line or two. you can add to the opening sentences, a very brief explanation of wh at aspects of the text brought you to this view . If you can give, say, four - six aspects, then you are setting out the coming structure of your essay . There is in an creek the gray-clad soldier farquhar is no better way to begin an essay than like this.

From this point on you will never be left scratching your head wondering what to write next. the poppets remainder of the essay is merely a series of value, PEE paragraphs that, point by point, argue the case for what you have just stated. Each point (P) needs its own paragraph and to poppets, have support (E) from the text (either a quotation, or an explanation of some aspect of form or structure ) along with with an explanation (E) of how the text brought you to such a view, the effects it created, the methods the author used to create the effects and, finally, its relevance to in an occurrence bridge about the bridge is, the text, that is, the author's purposes . That's it. Paynes! Done and dusted! More detail below if needed. The secret of a good essay? Make it an argument ! An effective essay is a piece of writing that makes a strong and well-supported case for a stated viewpoint . The view it makes the case for is your response to the essay title or question . You'll have arrived at after a couple of occurrence at owl the gray-clad the bridge, readings of the text, more if a poem, and one of poppets, which will be a so-called 'close-reading' when you annotate the text carefully in in a Sieve" line with whatever the essay question asks, seeking out support as quotations or explanations of useful effects created by form and structure . So your essay starts with a clear statement of your opinion . It could be something like, as an example: 'Shakespeare's theme of violence in Romeo and Juliet is shown especially effectively through the opening scene, as well as through the characters of Mercutio and Tybalt and an analysis of these three dramatic aspects will form the basis of this essay.' The opening overview is sometimes called a thesis statement . The 'thesis' is your response, i.e. the heart of your 'argument'. It's what the essay goes on to explain and support to show that it is a view that is poppets well - considered, based on the text and reasonable to hold . Essays are about embalming fluid, opinions, not facts. This point is crucial to take on board. There is never a straightforward right answer to an essay q uestion or title.

There are wrong answers, of course - caused through, for example, misinterpreting the text; but the 'answer' to an essay question will always be a point of view . Essays deal in opinions, not facts . This is why your teacher is paynes looking to read your views and why you have come to think in this particular way. How do you arrive at a 'thesis' or overview? This is the tough part - there#39;s no getting away from that. Not least, this is because it puts to the test your knowledge of the text and your understanding of the essay title or question . The good news is that when it's done and bean done well, the paynes poppets remainder of the essay becomes much more straightforward and far more interesting to write, perhaps even a little exciting! The Outline Structure for occurrence creek bridge soldier about is an Effective Essay. As already stated above, this first paragraph needs to open with a clearly stated summary of your whole 'answer' along with an equally brief summary of the paynes aspects of the text you'll be analysing to show your stated view is sound . In A Sieve"! It is these early sentences that provide the major 'signposts' that give your essay and its general direction. Importantly, you need to set a confident tone early on paynes, in the islamic beliefs essay. This can be done by adding in a very few details to show you've grasped the text's big picture . This should be a brief comment (brevity is everything in the opening paragraph) on poppets, the major details of the story (poem or whatever) along with an equally brief statement of any relevant context , (that is the situation you feel brought the writer to want to write their text, including key aspects of their social , cultural and in an bridge farquhar about the bridge is literary contexts ). This will, though, always need to be focused on the needs of the poppets essay question . Notice how you are constantly seeking to avoid waffle and islamic and practices generalised 'bolted on' comments ; instead, you need to keep all you write tightly focused on the needs of the essay title or question. This is the bulk of the poppets essay. It is tragedy definition a series of paragraphs each introduced with a new clear important and wholly relevant point . Poppets! Sadly, it's all too easy to open a in a way that inspires little confidence and which drifts from the essay question or argument. Avoid this by opening each and every paragraph in a way that is clearly and directly developing the essay's 'answer' or argument . If you started by stating the four-six aspects you'll be covering in your essay, then you'll have no difficulty knowing what to islamic and practices, write in these body paragraphs.

This is where you restate, in a different form, your opening argument and give a brief list of the paynes major points you have made along with a comment about the wider implications and relevance of what you have found. It will help to fluid weed, think back to the imaginary classroom situation. What would follow on from the highly condensed 'answer' you gave to your teacher? Your teacher might say, 'Good, that's a fair view to hold - but why do you think that? Show me from the text itself what made you think that way.' In the written essay, you'll need to be providing a whole lot more 'evidence' mainly in the form of quotations each one itself supported by paynes, a commentary derived from an analysis of the quotation's literary and linguistic content . However, with a central and guiding argument starting off and flowing through the entire essay, it now becomes much easier to search the text for aspects and quotations that will provide good quality evidence to enders game bean, support the paynes essay's points. Each point and supporting quotation needs to be followed by an analysis and comment . Some teachers call this the P.E.E. Enders! ( point example explanation ) or P.Q.C. ( point quotation comment ) system. Paynes Poppets! This is needed to explain how and why the aspect of the text or the quotation 'works' within the in a Sieve" Essay context of the poppets essay question and the originally stated argument. Certain key questions need to be answered concerning each quotation used: What techniques have been used to make the language of the quotation effective? This means discussing the writer's methods , e.g. through the creation of realistic dialogue; the use of an value chain porter, effective metaphor; through vivid description; onomatopoeia; alliteration; effective stage directions, etc. How does the method used affect the paynes reader's understanding of the text and its themes (e.g. 'the effect of this passage is to create a sense of really being there for the reader. ')? Why was this method used (i.e. what was the writer's purpose )? E.g. 'At this point on the story the author wants to fluid, gain the paynes poppets reader's attention in order to value porter, begin exploring the overall theme of injustice. Paynes Poppets! ' MARK GRABBING TIP No.

1! Begin all of your paragraphs in classic tragedy such a way that it is absolutely clear you are focused on the essay question and its requirements, thus building up your overall argument. This will keep the essay on track and avoid the paynes poppets plague of bridge the gray-clad soldier farquhar the bridge, poor essays: wandering, digression and waffle! What if your essay title isn't in the form of a question? When considered as a question, you will often find it is easier to generate that all-important single main point of poppets, view to in a, it - the main idea upon which you will then base the remainder of your essay . Here is an example of a main idea succinctly stated (i.e. thesis statement ) that could be used to create an argument essay from the above question: The remainder of this - or any other - essay must then be no more than a linked series of points with each point explained , developed and supported in a paragraph of its own . These points must all be directly related to paynes poppets, the main idea you have already explained in the opening paragraph, which itself is your response to the essay title or question. Remember that each point - each paragraph - must set out to explain , develop and support some aspect of your over-riding main idea and nothing more . In this example, the paragraph that follows the islamic beliefs and practices opening paragraph - the first of what is called the body paragraphs of your essay - could be based on paynes, the point that the theme of ambition is shown through what Macbeth and Lady Macbeth are given by Shakespeare to beliefs and practices, say and poppets do in Act One of the play. In An At Owl The Gray-clad Soldier Who Tells About! The third paragraph of paynes poppets, your essay - its second body paragraph - might then explore, develop and support how the value porter theme of ambition is shown through these two characters in some part of Act 2, and paynes poppets so on. Below you'll find lots more detail and value chain ideas for writing an effective essay but with luck, the above will have given you the poppets basic idea. Aim to 'integrate' words or phrases from the text you are studying directly into porter, your own sentences (still using quotation marks, of course).

Don't overdo this effective technique, but used sparingly, this use of paynes, 'embedded' quotations can help create a very impressive style, one that suggests you have a good grasp of the text and the essay question. Here are some examples of how to use embedded quotations. The first is from the opening of John Steinbeck's novel, 'Of Mice and porter Men': 'Small and paynes quick' George is in "Nectar in a Sieve" presented by Steinbeck as a character in complete contrast to his friend, the lumbering and 'shapeless' Lennie. Poppets! Here is a similarly embedded quotation from J B Priestley's 'An Inspector Calls': As the Inspector says, 'We don't live alone' and this is an important message Priestley gives his audience. Finally, see how this can be done using John Agard's poem, 'Half-Caste': Perhaps Agard also wants his reader to 'come back tomorrow' with a different attitude towards those they might feel are in any way different from themselves. MORE TIPS AND MORE DETAIL! Essays take a great deal of effort and time and so deserve careful preparation. T he most common failing examiners find is a lack of understanding of the text on which the essay is based.

This is to islamic and practices, take the road signpos ted 'Failure'. Poppets! But you're heading elsewhere. So. get to know your text well. You won't succeed if you don't! I f you struggle with the text, read it through again with a study guide to hand. Also, talk the weed text over with friends or your teacher. There is more help with specific texts here . Many essay writers fail to create an initial main viewpoint or drift from this single focus. This loses marks as it leads to waffle , vagueness and generalisation . As you've read above, another common pitfall is to focus too much on the surface features of the text you are writing about. This happens when you write at length about the poppets meaning of the text, i.e. by telling what happens in tragedy definition it. In effect, all you are doing when you do this is to retell the poppets story of the text. You need to be discussing how and why the author has created an effective text through careful, interesting and effective choices of style and language as well as structure . M ore marks are lost if you forget the need to support the porter points you make in paynes each paragraph.

A good idea is to try to use at Themes Sieve" least one quotation - or reference to paynes, the text - per paragraph. In An At Owl Soldier Who Tells About The Bridge! Remember, too, that this is an English essay and this means you need to reflect how authors use language and literary techniques in effective ways in their writing . Aim only to poppets, choose quotations that contain important elements in them that will allow you to discuss in depth aspects of, for example, their literary style , language or structure. Game! Consider discussing, for example, how the quotation acts to build tension , mood , character , a sense of paynes, place or how it helps explore one of the text's themes . Discuss, too, how the quotation works both at the point it occurs and as a contribution to the whole , i.e. the way it helps the writer achieve his or her purpose . This means you need to discuss aspects of the quotation such as its effectiveness - which means discussing aspects of language , structure and embalming fluid weed style . 1. DEVELOP A STRONG INITIAL FOCUS FOR YOUR ESSAY. The word 'essay' comes from a French word meaning 'attempt': your essay is your attempt to argue for your point of view , a view that when succinctly expressed is paynes poppets called a thesis statement . This 'thesis statement' needs to be an idea you developed based on an interpretation of enders game, whatever aspect of the text is asked in the essay question. Interpretation means considering how a text operates at different levels ; it is your interpretation of the text that will be at the heart of the essay: an interpretation that must supports the overall thesis statement. 2. FIND SOLID SUPPORT FOR YOUR VIEWPOINT. You will need to search through the text and note down a series of aspects and quotations that can be used to paynes poppets, support the weed overall view you have developed. Use 'post-it notes' to help with this or write the aspects/quotations down separately. Choose aspects or quotations that you can analyse successfully for the methods used , effects created and purpose intended . Paynes! 3. WRITE AN EFFECTIVE OPENING PARAGRAPH.

Use your introductory paragraph to state your point of view , i.e. your thesis statement. The purpose of your opening paragraph is to make clear your thesis statement - response to the essay question: that is, to explain the islamic focus of your argument - your main idea or point of paynes, view. Stated clearly at the opening to classic definition, your essay, this shows how you intend to paynes, answer the essay question and what general direction your essay will take. Following your thesis statement, it's a good idea to add a little more detail that acts to 'preview' each of the major points that you will cover in the body of the essay. This opening paragraph will then act to show - succinctly - where you stand regarding the questions and how you intend to answer it. Importantly, in the opening paragraph of your essay you will also need to write an overview of the text, one that gives a succinct summary of the ' big picture ' of the text; importantly, too, of course, this must be focused on the requirements of the essay question. Giving a succinct account of the big picture of the text in the opening paragraph will show that you have engaged with and digested the classic tragedy detail of three key aspects of the essay: the essay question, the paynes poppets text and occurrence at owl creek bridge soldier who tells farquhar the bridge its author - perhaps also, a brief account of the author's context . Giving an overview suggests a confident approach and is a hallmark of the best essays. TIP: It is always impressive to incorporate into paynes, your own sentences, using quotation marks of value, course, a short suitable quotation taken from the text. Some teachers call this using embedded quotations.

Keep all references to the biographical background of the paynes poppets author and any aspects of his or her context entirely relevant to the essay question and - brief! Remember that this is not a history or a sociology essay so very few marks are awarded for this kind of background information (although that does not mean it might not be useful). The majority of Essay, marks in paynes poppets an English essay are awarded for the quality of analysis and interpretation you show - that is, an awareness of the author's uses of the English language and literary uses of this. If your essay title does concern aspects of context try hard to discuss context by deriving your comments from quotations rather than by merely discussing aspects of context; in other words allow the text to introduce the context. TIP: avoid making simplistic and irrelevant value judgments of the text or its author. Saying that Shakespeare is 'a wonderful author' or that you think 'Of Mice and Men' is 'really good' will gain no marks whatsoever - this is game bean no more than a kind of waffle that fills space with empty words that add nothing useful to your essay. 4. USE THE REMAINING PARAGRAPHS EFFECTIVELY. Paynes Poppets! Follow the opening paragraph with a number of paragraphs that form the definition 'body' of the essay.

Each of these paragraphs are there purely to expand on paynes, and support your originally stated overall viewpoint. Having stated your main idea in your opening paragraph, now you need explore this, develop it and provide support from the text for this. In the essay's body paragraphs your aim is enders game bean to: follow the analysis system called P.E.E. or P.Q.C. For more on this see here ; work through the text's structure logically and, highlighting via the use of quotations, explain how these led you to develop your point of view; comment on paynes, how the language of each of these parts led you to form your interpretation: why did the islamic beliefs and practices author choose this particular type of language to poppets, make this point in value this way? How does it help a) the poppets audience and b) the writer's purpose or theme ? discuss how this individual part of the text forms a useful structural part of the Themes Essay text by poppets, leading the reader towards an overall understanding of the themes, messages or purposes of the tragedy definition text; CRUCIALLY. each paragraph needs to develop a separate and individual point - one that will help to show how different parts and aspects of the text helped you develop your interpretation and viewpoint (this is the POINT part of P.E.E.); A useful tip is to poppets, open each paragraph with a topic sentence . Game Bean! This is a sentence that clearly makes a point that is developing your argument - your answer to the essay question - and, because it is, therefore, clearly focused on the essay question, it will keep your writing on track; Always aim to provide support for each of the points you make by referring directly to the text (this is the paynes poppets EXAMPLE part of P.E.E.). You normally do this by quoting briefly from a relevant part of the text but you might choose to occurrence at owl creek who tells is, describe an poppets, event. It's very important NOT to write a long description of WHAT happens. Value Porter! If you do you are merely 'retelling the paynes story' - this loses many marks. In a play you also lose marks if you do not discuss aspects of the staging and stage action. In A Essay! You will need to follow each quotation with an explanation of and a discussion on aspects of the language the author used in the quotation; this means discussing, for example, how aspects of the quotations literary, poetic or dramatic language works, including mentioning the method the writer used, the effect the language creates and the reasons this might have been done (this is the EXPLAIN part of P.E.E).

You should also aim to paynes poppets, show how the quotation helped you develop your overall interpretation of the text (this is value chain also the EXPLAIN part of P.E.E). 5. CREATE A LOGICAL STRUCTURE. Always work in a clear way through the text, from paynes poppets, beginning to game bean, end. Avoid starting your essay by paynes poppets, discussing a point that occurs half way through your text: ALWAYS begin at porter the beginning! Many students begin discussing a text half way through or even near the end then go back to paynes poppets, an earlier point. This ignores the work the writer puts in to develop an effective structure to in an at owl creek about is, their text - and loses marks! 6. CONCLUDE EFFECTIVELY. The conclusion to an essay is important but causes problems for many students.

It should leave your reader with a pleasant and logical sense of poppets, 'closure' - a 'wrapping up' of the main ideas behind the essay . 1. Classic! Re-state in a different form (using rather different words) your opening argument. Paynes Poppets! 2. Now bring together your main points (again, avoiding simple repetition of the same words): list or summarise the main points from the preceding paragraphs (use the tragedy topic sentences from poppets, each paragraph to give you an idea). 3. End by identifying some of the wider implications and relevance that arise from what you have found and explored. The conclusion should consist of just a few sentences but these will need to be made to sound convincing and authoritative . It's crucial to keep the conclusion brief and to the point and, above all else, to introduce no new material at all. ALWAYS WRITE ANALYTICALLY , NEVER DESCRIPTIVELY. Here is an example of how many students go wrong; don't worry, you won't - but this is a very common mistake: In William Shakespeare's play, 'Romeo and Juliet', these are the first two lines of the 'Prologue' as spoken by 'The Chorus': 'Two households, both alike in tragedy definition dignity, In fair Verona, where we lay our scene. ' What follows is a typical 'retelling': an 'overview' or 'translation' that gains no marks : 'Here, Shakespeare is paynes saying that the play is set in fluid weed Verona where there are two dignified families.' Compare the above 'description' with this analytical and insightful interpretation : 'The opening lines of the Prologue are important because they paint a picture for paynes the audience of what could and should be - fairness and dignity. These words set up a powerful contrast to what is: the violence, hatred and classic definition bloodshed shown in the coming scene. It will be against paynes, this violent backdrop that the pure love of Romeo and Juliet will have to struggle.' Which approach and beliefs style would gain the higher mark? STUCK FOR WHAT TO WRITE ABOUT? THERE ARE FOUR KEY ASPECTS THAT APPLY TO ALL TEXTS AND WHICH SHOULD FORM THE BASIS OF ANY LITERATURE ESSAY.

FORM, CONTENT, STRUCTURE AND STYLE. This is so very often ignored despite the fact that it provides the basis for paynes poppets the very best essays because it provides a subtle response. And subtlety always receives the porter highest marks ! When you write about a text at the level of its form , you analyse how aspects of it other than the meaning of its language have been used by the writer in important and effective ways. To give you an idea of the importance of poppets, form to a text, you yourself make use of the form of language when you speak loudly or softly , or when you chat or text a friend and use CAPS LOCK. Also, when you create short or long sentences or paragraphs you are affecting the look - the form - of your writing. This, albeit subtly, affects the way the writing is received and interpreted. Definition! A novelist makes use of form by writing in sentences and paragraphs of varying lengths (you can imagine the effect a very short sentence, or a one-line paragraph, for example). The use of dialogue (spoken words shown inside speech marks) is also an effective use of form, as is the use of underlining , bold or italics - or, in non-fiction texts, the inclusion of bullet points or sections.

Poets are acutely aware of and very creative with the poppets use of form. A poet makes use of form, for example, by consciously splitting up sentences into the lines of poetry . Definition! This allows the poet to exaggerate a particular word by paynes poppets, placing it at the end of a line, or by rhyming it with a similar sounding word. A non-fiction writer makes use of form by using layout and appearance and by adding illustrations and photographs , and so on. All writers use form by using patterns of sound , such as by using alliteration , rhyme , rhythm , onomatopoeia , assonance and so on. A playwright, of course, uses form very differently. When your essay concerns a play, therefore, you'll definitely be losing marks if you ignore aspects of embalming fluid, form. In a play, much of the 'meaning' is created not from language but from what you see happening on the stage - the staging and stage action. Poppets! This includes not just what the actors do but what they wear , where they stand and so on - all potentially important formal aspects of the play that should find their way onto your essay. Form is always worthy of creek soldier farquhar about the bridge, comment when (but only when ) if it adds usefully to the meaning, i.e. the content of a text.

Every word and phrase has a literal meaning . This is its basic dictionary meaning. It's sometimes called a word's denotation . E.g. 'In this story, the author's detailed description of darkness denotes the coming on of a storm'. This is a way of 'playing' around with a word's meaning that makes writing more vivid , emotional and interesting . Poppets! Words and phrases can be used differently from at owl the gray-clad soldier who tells farquhar the bridge is, their literal context and paynes given what is called a connotation . Using connotation or figurative language , a writer can introduce layers of porter, meaning - especially emotional meaning (don't forget that many words can create both meaning and feeling ). The most common way this is done is to use a word not for its literal meaning but for its metaphorical or figurative meaning. Another way is to paynes, use a word that acts as symbolically and represents something very different from its literal meaning. In "Nectar In A Essay! E.g. 'As well as suggesting the coming of a storm, the darkness also acts to suggest a metaphorical darkness is paynes taking over the character's mind. In this way the darkness seems to be symbolising a kind of evil'.

Using a pun - a witty play on words - is another way that meaning can be played with in game an interesting way. Punning works because some words, in a certain context, can have an paynes, ambiguous meaning - two possible meanings - one of which might be humorous. Irony is a key way that writers use to classic, create layers of poppets, meaning. Sarcasm is irony, but this is a spoken form of in a Sieve" Essay, irony that is paynes intended to hurt someone's feelings by classic tragedy definition, ridiculing some aspect of them. It's a crude, easy kind of irony not really subtle enough for writing. Irony is usually subtle , sophisticated , edgy and witty ; an altogether more intelligent use of language. But irony can also be difficult to recognise - yet it is probably true to say that irony is one of the most common means by which a sophisticated writer creates layers of meaning in paynes a text . Irony works because when it is recognised, it engages the reader very much more closely with the text. This is because, rather like solving a puzzle, there is a real enjoyment and satisfaction in unpicking the various levels of meaning created by the irony. Creating an beliefs, 'ironic tone of voice' in writing is much harder than in speech because the original sound of voice and facial expression or body language of the speaker are absent. To create an ironic tone (or any tone, for that matter), words have to paynes poppets, be chosen with great care.

It is a key reading skill to be able to detect this as it tells you what attitude the writer is taking towards their subject matter. An example of irony occurs in an old story by O. Henry called 'The Gift of the in "Nectar Essay Magi'. This story of poor young lovers ends with the boyfriend selling the one thing he owns of value, his pocket watch, in order to buy his girlfriend an expensive hair comb; equally secretly, she has all of her long hair cut off to sell to a wig maker so she can afford to buy him. a chain for poppets his watch. Structure is the way a writer consciously 'shapes' a piece of writing in an attempt to make it as effective as possible for their audience and their purpose. It is important to comment on the structure of weed, a text, e.g. 'The way the author slowly builds up the tension throughout this chapter helps create a feeling of real excitement and mystery'. Style is the way a writer or speaker consciously chooses language and language features to poppets, suit a particular audience to achieve a specific purpose . When you aim to convince your mum that Friday's party cannot be missed, you will consciously adapt your style to one that is more emotional and persuasive! Some famous writers have a particular style of their own that is quickly recognisable. John Steinbeck, Charles Dickens and William Wordsworth are three such writers - here, a writer's individual style is sometimes referred to as the enders game bean writer's 'voice'. Your primary job when analysing and discussing a text is to comment on its style - on what are called the stylistic or language choices its writer has made, especially those that seem to you to have been chosen to create a particular effect to achieve a certain purpose. Paynes! So. if you are commenting on the form and in an occurrence creek is content of a writer's language, you are commenting on the writer's style . COMPARING TWO OR MORE TEXTS. Even though it's a central part of the mark scheme, and always made clear in the essay question or title, each year many students still manage to write their comparison exam answer or coursework essay and forget to compare and paynes poppets contrast the texts .
