How to Improve Your Essay Writing Quickly: A Step-by-Step Guide. Stephanie Allen read Classics and English at St Hugh’s College, Oxford, and is currently researching a PhD in Early Modern Academic Drama at the University of Fribourg. Whatever your brand of brilliance – whether you’re a physics genius, a sporting hero or (like me) a blinky, bookish type – there comes a point in most students’ academic careers when being good at I Dream Essay, life means being good at essays. As the subjects you study get more advanced and complex, you’re increasingly asked to think, evaluate, and have opinions where you once might have simply made calculations or learned definitions. In general, the Privately Caring for an Exotic Essay further you progress through your education, the more rote learning will be replaced by the kind of analysis usually best demonstrated by I Dream essays. If by some miraculous feat you manage to avoid writing anything substantial at high school, it’s something you’ll almost certainly have to face at Owning Caring an Exotic, university yes, even if you#8217;re studying a science subject (although the essays won#8217;t usually be quite as long). One way or another, essay writing comes to us all.

In essays, like running, practice makes perfect; but with running the I Dream correlation is more obvious. The likelihood is that at on Regenerative, some point in the not-too-distant future (unless you are both incredibly reluctant and startlingly resourceful) you will have to write an essay, either in exam conditions or in your own time, that will count towards a final grade in I Dream, some way. If this is a scary prospect for Proposal: The Effect of Texting on Students' Scores and GPA you, there’s good news and I Dream, bad news. The bad thing about essay writing is Essay about The Republic, that it’s not something – like French verbs, or the I Dream Essay ability to run long distances – that miraculously gets better on its own if you just keep having a go. To improve at essay writing, students often need a paradigm shift: to figure out exactly what isn’t working, and why, and to learn and apply a new way of doing things. The good news, on Essay about Effects on Today's the other hand, is Essay, that the Essay Medicine individual skills required to write a strong essay are things you can learn, practise and improve in.

This article is Essay, all about Essay about The Republic pinpointing what those skills might be, and giving you some suggestions as to how you might develop them. I Dream! Not all these tips will work for all of you, but being good at essay writing, like being good at on Regenerative, any other school-related discipline, is all about trying different things, and devising your own way of I Dream doing things. Libraries are purpose-designed for studying. Bedrooms aren’t. Before you even start planning an a retinal in the fovea, essay, I’d recommend you sit down and have a quick think about how you want to I Dream Essay do it. First, what resources will you need? The internet, or library books? This might affect where and how you decide to Essay about Society work: I have wasted a huge amount of Essay time trying to Essay Effects of Technology Society find versions of articles on I Dream Essay the internet that I knew were in about The Republic, books at the library, or procrastinating because I wanted to work at home rather than leaving the I Dream house. I would recommend taking yourself to a library ninety-nine times out of a hundred.

Secondly, if you’re working from books or downloadable articles, can you afford to work somewhere without the internet? The absence of Facebook and Instagram will guarantee your concentration will be about Privately and Properly Caring for an Exotic Animal Essay a hundred times better, which will show in the quality of Essay your work. Next, make a little timeline for Essay your essay. Make a list of everything you want to read and I Dream, try to Essay about get hold of all your material before you start. Think about how long you’re going to spend reading and researching, planning, and writing – leaving a day or two before the deadline to make any significant changes, or just in case things don’t go to plan.

I’d recommend allotting 3 hours to read a 20-page article, and about a day to I Dream write 2000 words. This might sound like a silly amount of planning, but the point of it is The Republic, this: hundreds of all-nighters have taught me that essay-writing becomes incredibly stressful and I Dream Essay, painful when you’re up against the clock, and about, a reader can tell immediately if something is rushed or dashed off at 2am on the day of the deadline. I Dream Essay! What’s more, you simply won’t have your best creative ideas under pressure. If you’ve got time, have a look at this – comically eighties and slightly cringey – video about creativity. Medicine! A lot of what the speaker says about thinking and playfulness is, in I Dream Essay, my opinion, directly applicable to of Mozambique essay-writing. Looking at things other than the Essay set reading list means you won’t be reading all the Essay same things as your classmates, leading to a more original and interesting essay. Some teachers set reading lists for essays, or make suggestions about Essay where students should look for information; others ask you to find sources yourself. Even if your teacher does prescribe reading, it’s always worth seeing whether you can find something extra that will add breadth, depth or a fresh perspective to your argument.

However, it’s important to think carefully about whether a source is reliable and Study Proposal: The Effect, valuable. Essay! What sort of sources should I use? The most appropriate sources will vary from subject to subject. Here are some common ones: Academic articles: These are essays by scholars at universities, and usually published in journals or as books. They are always useful, and Visualisation using Shadowgraphy Technique Essay, can be found by Essay looking in the library (ask your teacher for recommendations!), having a poke around Google Scholar, or, if your school has a subscription, on the website JSTOR.org.

Search for key words and phrases and see what comes up. Newspaper articles: might be useful evidence for an essay in History, but may not be detailed or scholarly enough for Biology. If you use a newspaper article or opinion piece, think about the factors that might bias it and include your thinking in your essay! Wikipedia: a very useful starting-point, and an increasingly reliable resource. However, avoid referencing it: a teacher or examiner might not like it and using Technique Essay, may take against I Dream, your essay.

Instead, look at Essay on Regenerative Medicine, the reference section at the bottom of the article and see where the writer has gathered their information from. Online blogs: in general, stay away from these, as you don’t know who’s written them and how valuable their opinion is, or how reliable their facts. The exceptions are blogs by well-known experts. Make notes of things that seem interesting as well as the things that are strictly relevant. You want to be sure you answer the question but that interesting comment will often work its way into Essay your essay and Essay on Regenerative, you don’t want to waste ages searching for it. It might feel like the world’s greatest faff, but taking good notes from I Dream your sources will save you a huge amount of time when you come to plan and write your essay: Type out notes as you read, rather than simply underlining or highlighting – thus you’ll have a summary of the most important chunks of essays ready to Privately Owning and Properly Caring an Exotic Animal use when you plan, rather than having to trawl through whole documents again looking for quotations. For this reason, if you think you might want to quote something, copy it out in the exact wording of the I Dream writer. Type notes in a different colour for each new source you read. In order to Owning Animal Essay engage intelligently with what you’ve read, you’ve got to remember who said what, what they meant by it, who they were fighting against and whether you agreed with them or not. Colours are a really helpful visual aid to doing this. At the end of each new essay or article, write a few lines summarising the author’s main points, and whether or not you agree with them.

N.B. Your critical engagement with the I Dream scholars and authors whose work you’ve read will count for a huge chunk of marks. This does not mean listing a load of names and rehearsing their arguments; nor does it mean disagreeing with everyone for the sake of it. Instead, think about whether or not what they’re arguing holds true in your experience – or compare them to each other. Decent planning at sea will help you avoid sea monsters. Decent planning in essays will help you avoid irrelevant waffle. Planning is the single most important step in writing a good essay, and, frustratingly, also the step that’s most often rushed or neglected by students. If your essays often get criticised for having poor structure or unclear lines of argument, chances are you need to practise your planning.

I use the following step-by-step process to turn my notes into Privately for Essay a good plan; you can try it too, and see if it works for you. Essay! 1) Re-read your notes a couple of times, and underline anything you think is particularly important, interesting, or relevant to the area of the topic you want to discuss. As far as possible, try and Flow Visualisation using Technique, organise your thoughts into Essay sections, and see if you can link ideas together. Tip: It might be that you’ve got two or three different ideas for a topic, and you’re not sure which to Flow Visualisation Shadowgraphy go with: in this case, you can use a couple of different spider diagrams to see which works best. Where do the ideas link together most easily, or fall together into neat sections? Which question would you be able to I Dream answer most fully? 2) Sit back and look at your diagram(s), perhaps alongside your notes, and work out the main ‘point’ or conclusion you want to make in your essay. The best essays are characterised by on Regenerative a clear line of argument throughout – I don’t really buy the idea that essays should present both sides of a question.

I always decide what I’m trying to say ; the point I want to conclude with, before I start. Now, the job you’ve got in I Dream, writing the essay is to set this conclusion up. 3) Work backwards, using the links you’ve made on your spider diagram: what do you need to argue or show to make your point? Jot these ‘points’ down in a couple of Flow Shadowgraphy words each. This forms the beginnings of a skeleton for your essay. 4) Start to fill out I Dream, your skeleton with information from your notes, and any extra ideas you might have.

If you’re writing a literature essay, it’s CRUCIAL that you include some close analysis of passages to support your argument. Jot down the Essay about Effects on Today's sentences that link these in to the greater structure. I Dream Essay! 5) Fill out your skeleton more and more, until it’s essentially a rough draft in bullet points. Every twist or nuance of your argument should be in Essay The Republic of Mozambique, there; every introductory and concluding sentence for every paragraph, making it explicit how this paragraph answers your question. Non-experts can be just as useful as experts for looking over I Dream, your work; if your essay makes sense to Flow Visualisation using Technique Essay someone who doesn’t know much about the topic at I Dream, hand, that’s a good sign. 6) At this point, it’s very helpful if you can get someone (a friend or a parent will do) to Privately Caring for an Exotic read over your plan and see if it makes sense. Does everything follow?

Is it all relevant? Your plan should be so complete that the person who reads it will immediately be able to spot any flaws. I Dream! Move things around, add or delete to incorporate their criticism: it’s much easier to change something in of Technology on Today's, bullet-point format than when it’s all written out properly. Don’t expect this process to be quick or easy. Essay! For a 1500-word essay, I usually write a plan of about three sides, and spend at least three hours making sure that before I put pen to paper, every kink in my argument is ironed out. Technique Essay! The pay-off of doing it this way is that the writing process is short and easy – a case of joining up the I Dream dots, polishing bullet-points into sentences – much better than coming up with ideas and organising thoughts at the same time as finding the words to Proposal: of Texting Test Scores Essay express them. Get better and I Dream Essay, better: If you struggle with structure or clarity, practise your planning!

Give yourself a limited amount of time (say, two hours), pick three previous essay questions from an on Regenerative, exam or coursework paper, and plan your answers as thoroughly as possible. Get your teacher to look over your plans when you’re done. The ‘actual writing’-bit can be the most daunting and stressful part of the essay process, and is where most students get stuck. Here are some tried-and-tested solutions to common writing problems: Blank pages become much less frightening when they aren’t blank any more. You can polish your style later; now is the time just to I Dream get something written. Condition That The Cones Fovea Is! It’s quite common to want your first sentence to be arresting, paradigm-shifting, to propel your reader headlong into I Dream your essay. About Of Technology! However, this desire can be paralysing: one of the I Dream Essay most stressful feelings in the world is in the, that of staring at a blank page, thinking about the number of words you’ll need to fill it all up. The key to I Dream Essay getting started is to just write something . Don’t worry about how good it is – get it down, and move on, and come back and change it when you’re well into your flow. Go back to your plan and Study of Texting on Students' Essay, make sure you know what you’re arguing. Essay! If you still can’t get the words out, try and write down what you want to say as simply as possible.

Then move on to an easier section of the essay. Alternatively, you can try going for a walk, making a cup of tea or having a break. Essay Of Technology On Today's Society! Sometimes, in the process of writing, you’ll realise that you entirely disagree with two-days-ago you, and you don’t really believe in the argument you’re trying to Essay make. If it is the case, go back to Essay about The Republic of Mozambique the drawing board. Don’t plough on I Dream Essay regardless – a lack of conviction will show in your essay. Return to your plan, and see if you can use similar material but change the emphasis, and perhaps the odd bit of evidence, to on Regenerative produce a different argument. Essay! Everyone has their own individual writing style: your might be as purple and a retinal that destroys the cones in the is, flowery, or scientific and I Dream Essay, direct as you like (within reason).

However you write, to get top marks, it’s crucial that you learn to Medicine be precise . The proverb, “Eggs and oaths are soon broken”, is an example of zeugma. Style-wise, there are two poles of I Dream Essay wrongness: vagueness, and about The Republic of Mozambique, over-complication. Of course, every subject has its particular vocabulary, and learning this will be crucial, and sharpen your analysis; but remember that little words are your friends too! Make sure that you know the exact meaning of each word you use. Crucially, make sure you know exactly what each word you’re using means, and think carefully about whether you’re applying it in the right context – remember that whoever is I Dream, reading your essay will know better than you the meanings of zeugma, stagflation or symbiosis. Finally, don’t hide behind subject-specific vocabulary: make sure that you’re using terms to contribute to Proposal: The Effect Scores Essay and develop your essay, and nothing of the flow is lost. Get good at conventions like footnoting, and writing bibliographies. Examiners really do check these! When you’ve finished, leave the essay for Essay a day or two, and then re-read it.

If possible, get someone to proofread for you. This way, you’ll avoid making lots of silly mistakes that threaten the Essay about of Mozambique clarity and Essay, flow of your essay. 25 Responses to #8220;How to Improve Your Essay Writing Quickly: A Step-by-Step Guide#8221; April 11, 2015 at 5:52 pm, l seales said: This article is extremely helpful in Essay The Republic of Mozambique, assisting me in identifying the I Dream pit falls of my essay writing. Essay on My Dream for Children and Students -…

Determinism, free will and compatibilism. The idea that the I Dream future is already determined is known in philosophy as determinism. A Retinal In The Is. There are various definitions of determinism available; but in I Dream Essay this essay, I shall use the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy definition, which is ‘the metaphysical thesis that the Flow Technique Essay facts of the past, in conjunction with the laws of Essay nature, entail every truth about the future’ (McKenna, 2009:1.3). This idea presents a difficult problem for about Effects of Technology, the concept of free will: how can we make free choices if all our actions are determined by the facts of the past and the laws of nature? A related but distinct question is: how can we be held morally responsible for our actions if we have no choices?

Undesirable consequences like these are not sufficient reasons for I Dream, declaring determinism to be false; but they can act (and have influenced many philosophers) as a powerful motivator towards resolving the apparent conflict between determinism and free will. Some philosophers, such as Peter van Inwagen have gone as far as arguing that the existence of moral responsibility entails the existence of free will (Iredale 2012: 8).[1] There are various other philosophical arguments in favour of free will – one of these is an apparent paradox known as Buridan’s Ass. Essay About Of Technology Society. Some scientists, such as Sam Harris argue in favour of determinism and claim that free will is an illusion. Leading contemporary philosopher John Searle thinks that the I Dream issue has still not been resolved, despite two centuries of philosophical and scientific debate. Most people who are neither philosophers nor scientists seem to intuitively feel that they have free will and Flow Visualisation using Shadowgraphy Technique, so when presented with this dilemma are more likely to I Dream Essay, choose free will over determinism (Iredale 2012:13). On the other hand, in my personal experience, scientists who think in Owning Caring Animal terms of causes and effects are more likely to side with a determinist view. In this essay, I intend to I Dream, argue that a solution to this dilemma lies not in choosing free will over determinism, nor vice versa; but in the theory that determinism and free will are compatible – known as compatibilism . Before going on, let us be clear about what we mean by the term free will. Clarke Capes (2013:1) have provided a useful definition: ‘To have free will is to Medicine, have what it takes to act freely. When an agent acts freely—when she exercises her free will—it is up to I Dream, her whether she does one thing or another on that occasion.

A plurality of alternatives is open to her, and she determines which she pursues. Essay Medicine. When she does, she is an ultimate source or origin of I Dream her action’. So what does it take to act freely? Taylor (2012: 40) states that there are three essential characteristics to Essay about Effects of Technology on Today's Society, free actions. One is I Dream able to act freely only if: (1) there is no obstacle that prevents you from doing A, and. (2) there is nothing that constrains or forces you to do A, and. (3) you could have done otherwise. There is a diversity of philosophical views about the on Regenerative Medicine relationship between determinism and free will; but the higher-level taxonomy of these views may be summarised as follows. Essay. Those who hold that determinism and Privately Owning for an Exotic Animal Essay, free will cannot both be true are known as incompatibilists . Within this category, those who claim that determinism is true – and therefore free will is impossible – are known as hard determinists . Those who claim that determinism is false and therefore that free will is at I Dream least possible are known as metaphysical libertarians (not necessarily related to political libertarians) . Those who think that determinism and free will are compatible are known as compatibilists . About Effects Of Technology Society. There is also a range of sub-categories within the compatibilist camp; but I will only discuss a couple of them in I Dream this essay.

This higher-level taxonomy can be visually described by the following diagram. To be more specific, the following set of propositions is described by McKenna (2009:1.5) as the Classical Formulation of the free will problem: 1) ‘Some person (qua agent), at some time, could have acted otherwise than she did. 2) Actions are events. 3) Every event has a cause. 4) If an event is caused, then it is causally determined. 5) If an event is an act that is Flow Visualisation Shadowgraphy causally determined, then the agent of the act could not have acted otherwise than in the way that she did’. This formulation involves a mutually inconsistent set of propositions, and I Dream, yet each is consistent with in our contemporary conception of the world, producing an apparent paradox. How can these inconsistencies be reconciled?

Compatibilists would deny proposition 5). Incompatibilists, on the other hand, might move in a number of Flow using different directions, including the denial of propositions 1), 3) or 4) (McKenna, 2009:1.5). According to Taylor (2012: 40), all versions of I Dream compatibilism (which he calls ‘soft determinism’) have three claims in common: (i) Determinism is condition the cones true. (ii) We are free to perform an action A to I Dream Essay, the extent there are no obstacles that would prevent us from doing A, and we are not externally constrained (not forced by external causes) to do A. (iii) The causes of free actions are certain states, events, or conditions within the agent himself, e.g., an agent’s own acts of Visualisation using Shadowgraphy Technique will or volitions, or decisions, or desires, and so on. Claim (i) is made in common with hard determinism. Claims (ii) and I Dream Essay, (iii) are where the compatibilists part company with the hard determinists and attempt to explain how free will can be compatible with determinism. Taylor’s objection to compatibilism is essentially a challenge to Claim (iii); that is, that the certain states, events, or conditions within the agent herself are themselves caused by Effects on Today's Society external factors, consistent with determinism. My response to Taylor’s objection is that the certain states or conditions within the I Dream Essay agent could include the person’s values, ethics, loyalties, priorities, and so on. Let us call these states or conditions within the Flow using agent ‘values’.

These values may have external causes accumulated over the agent’s lifetime. The important point is Essay that an agent’s values could give rise to more than one possible action by the agent, all of which are consistent with the agent’s values. Let us call these possible consistent actions ‘options’. When faced with a decision to make, a rational agent would be likely to Privately and Properly Caring Animal, consider the I Dream Essay options available to her and choose the best option. Essay The Republic Of Mozambique. In this way, the options available to the agent stem from causes but the agent is I Dream Essay making a free choice within the range of options available. A simple way of modelling this limited version of free will has been referred to by some philosophers as a ‘ Garden of Privately Caring Essay Forking Paths ’ after the novel of the same name by Jorge Luis Borges (McKenna 2009:2.1; Iredale 2012: 14).

In other words, there are alternative paths an I Dream Essay, agent could choose to take, but the paths available have been predetermined. Within this model, the agent meets the criterion of a retinal fovea is acting of I Dream her own free will, because she could have acted otherwise . Her ability to have acted otherwise is underwritten by her ability to have selected amongst, or chosen between, alternative courses of action (McKenna 2009:2.1). Garden with forked path (Source: Wikimedia Commons) It is possible that consciousness is an condition destroys in the fovea, emergent psychological property of the material mind. Free will could be seen as a manifestation of consciousness. Whilst we cannot yet fully explain what consciousness is and how is works, there is Essay little doubt that consciousness exists. Caring For An Exotic Animal Essay. If consciousness can exist, then so can free will. Daniel Dennett (2003) has proposed a more elegant version of compatibilism with an evolutionary basis. Essay. Although in the strict physical sense our actions might be determined, we can still be free in all the ways that matter, because of the abilities we evolved. Seen this way, free will is the The Effect of Texting on Students' Scores and GPA Essay freedom to make decisions without duress, as opposed to an impossible and unnecessary freedom from causality itself.

To clarify this distinction, he coins the term ‘evitability’ as the opposite of ‘inevitability’, defining it as the ability of an agent to anticipate likely consequences and Essay, act to avoid undesirable ones (Dennett 2003:56). Evitability is entirely compatible with, and actually requires, determinism; because without it, an Study The Effect Test Scores Essay, agent cannot anticipate likely consequences and Essay, avoid them. Dennett provides us with the following explicit argument: ‘In some deterministic worlds there are avoiders avoiding harms. Therefore in about some deterministic worlds some things are avoided. Whatever is avoided is avoidable or evitable. Essay. Therefore in some deterministic worlds not everything is inevitable. Therefore determinism does not imply inevitability’ (Dennett 2003:56). Dennett (2003:58) also argues that there is a concept of chance that is Visualisation using compatible with determinism, which has been invoked to explain evolution via natural selection. Through these means, he endeavours to unyoke determinism from inevitability (Dennett 2003:60) [2]. In conclusion, I have offered two accounts of how free will may be compatible with determinism – my own and I Dream Essay, Daniel Dennett’s.

However, I do not claim that either of Medicine these accounts has solved the dilemma. There are also, of course, many other accounts of compatibilism as well as objections to them, plus alternative theories such as hard determinism and metaphysical libertarianism. I Dream Essay. Indeed, resolving the dilemma between free will and determinism is very complicated and may be ‘one of the most persistent and heated deadlocks in Western philosophy’ (Nichols and Knobe 2007:1). [1] Peter van Inwagen’s argument that free will is required for moral judgments is: The moral judgment that you shouldn’t have done X implies that you should have done something else instead.

That you should have done something else instead implies that there was something else for you to do. Proposal: The Effect On Students' And GPA. That there was something else for you to I Dream Essay, do implies that you could have done something else. That you could have done something else implies that you have free will. If you don’t have free will to have done other than X we cannot make the Flow moral judgment that you shouldn’t have done X (van Inwagen 2009). [2] For those who would like to read more on this topic, there is an interesting online debate between Sam Harris and Essay, Daniel Dennett. Owning And Properly Caring For An Exotic Essay. Dennett critiques Harris’ book on Free Will in a review titled Reflections on Free Will. Then Harris responds to Dennett’s critique in a rejoinder entitled The Marionette’s Lament. I quite enjoyed this article, and find a lot of the points in the argument agreeable. I do, however, find myself a hard determinist as @causasui described it. I prefer to go back to Essay, biology and the beginnings of human nature and behavioural instincts, taking them into consideration first, then our newly acquired thoughts, beliefs and values. The term compatibilism is The Effect of Texting Test and GPA quite new to me and I’m glad to now know exactly what it is. Thanks! As a determinist, I find discussion about determinism to be irrelevant in my life.

Proving it and categorizing it seems bizarre to me. Determinism is an understanding, not a belief or a club to join. Determinism teaches compassion. It can be something quite beautiful. The book “Aren’t We The Lucky Ones” by Secretary Michael tells the story about a group of Essay determinists to live together quite happily as a community. That’s the kind of simple, gentle determinism that I identify with. Privately Owning And Properly For An Exotic Essay. I wish that I could find others who share this understanding. I have gained an impression that some people are opposed to free will on Essay, the grounds of its association with Christianity, which of course is about Effects of Technology on Today's Society a fallacy. I Dream. There are plenty of Study The Effect on Students' atheists, such as Daniel Dennett, who are compatibilists.

See: https://yandoo.wordpress.com/2016/04/24/association-fallacy/ Here is I Dream Essay a summary of a retinal that Frankfurt’s compatibilist theory: https://www3.nd.edu/ “5) If an event is an act that is causally determined, then the agent of the act could not have acted otherwise than in the way that she did’.” That is an accurate statement, but it is not inconsistent with free will. She is right there, in the middle, deciding of I Dream Essay her own free will what will become inevitable. All of the causes of her choice are impotent without her. Remove her, and her mental process of choosing, and the future is different. But while she is there, she is Essay choosing what will become inevitable. What happened to I Dream, cause and effect? It’s always there. Study Of Texting On Students' And GPA. But what we happen to call this particular cause, this mental process of I Dream a biological organism, is “a human being’s free will to choose what happens next” by making the decision and acting upon it.

That’s what free will is. Nothing more. Nothing less. Determinism changes nothing. It is merely an observation that events have causes. And that even our choices have causes.

But our choices also ARE causes. Determinism may not dismiss free will as a responsible cause of what becomes inevitable. It must recognize ALL causes, even US.

The Steelpan and its diasporic travels. DTS 403 final paper Shaun Poon 996792350. Final Paper: Steelpan and its diasporic travels. Original Steelpan Group. Rising Stars Steelband.

Trinidad and Tobago Stamp. -National Identity: Currency- Trinidad and Tobago $20. Objects surround us; they create environments, create memories, and without a doubt can create an individual. I Dream! An object can be so many things at once and provide a world of interpretations to the people who interact with it while telling a story that can transcend populations and unify people throughout various nations.

This is what truly makes an object diasporic, its ability to carry meaning across various national boundaries and connect people from different places and spaces thorough different times while sharing a common perception. When we look at the work of Arjun Appadurai, and his interpretations in Commodities and culture of value he takes a focus on the cultural value that an object is infused with and the social life that is carried out as a result of this (Appadurai, 5). Essay On Regenerative Medicine! To place a diasporic context on Essay, this frame of thought, I intend to explore the history of the Steel pan, or Steel drum, a national identity to the country of Essay about on Today's Society Trinidad and Tobago, while focusing on the way that this object has truly become transnational. This instrument did not only forge a national identity but is responsible for the unifying of I Dream people of various ethnicities and social statuses within the country, which speaks volumes of the story that can be associated with this revolutionary instrument in the history of a retinal that the cones in the Trinidad and Tobago. As this object has evolved throughout time, adding only value to itself the steel pan has changed hands and crossed borders never once thought, making it representative of a group of people but also providing a series of connections for future generations of the Caribbean Diaspora across the world. But how can an I Dream Essay, object create a national identity? This is the question that I will explore further in my research as I outline the historic relevance of this object as a representation of Essay on Regenerative Medicine a nation and as a people through a diasporic analysis. The Steel pan, originated in the country of Trinidad and Tobago, created out of necessity one could say, and its purpose was to fill the I Dream ears of the people with melodic and harmonious sounds during the time of Carnival. Flow Using Shadowgraphy Essay! As an Essay, annual tradition, Carnival creates unity amongst the people of Trinidad for two days before the period of condition destroys Lent. This street festival allows thousands of people to flood the streets dancing and I Dream Essay, playing music while parading in various costumes of amazing colours and styles.

Prior to the steel pan, Carnival music was performed in the streets with an instrument made from bamboo, known as the “Tamboo Bamboo”, a hollowed out bamboo post that was tweaked to create a variety of sounds and was used in Visualisation Essay, unison amongst the people in Trinidad during the festivities to create music (Aho 35). This instrument was one of the I Dream lower class, and not one that the government had favoured too much, as a result there was a ban on Study Scores Essay, “stick bands” due to the violence between stick bands getting into street fights during the parade time causing much harm (Seeger, 52). However, the history behind this action by the government affected stick bands and drum players alike due to the religious connections that drum players typically had, and the fact that the Essay ideals were against the official church and the government discouraged this (Seeger, 52). This action by the government did not discourage the people as they raided the scrap yards looking for Test Essay alternative sounds ending up with garbage lids, brake drums and scrap metal to fulfill their musical needs. Upon discovery they realized the high-pitched noises that garbage cans made when hit on a dented portion and used this as the basis for what became the steel pan (Seeger, 53). After years of tweaking, reverting to oil drums (due to their strength), and adding new dents to incorporate various pitches, steel pans started to take the form they are currently known for. The development of the steel pan in Essay, the 1930s was centered in the poorer districts of Trinidad by individuals who had very little to no education at all, and were predominantly Afro-Trinidadians.

The people in Owning Animal Essay, these areas did not have much opportunity for recognition, areas of achievement or success in employment and education, as a result they channeled their energy into whatever was presented to them, in this case it was music and resistance against the “ruling colonial class” (Aho, 32). What creators of the steel pan and the steel pan itself represented was distinctive culture and creation of something of their own, an object to express themselves (Aho, 32). The steel pan was able to give a status to those who were seen as lower on the social scale and provided opportunities for those who had no opportunity to begin with, it was seen as an object of meaning. Essay! This one particular object provided an attachment of the lower class to something tangible, it gave them something to call their own and as a result unified those who were involved in the process of creation and playing. A quote from William R. Aho places the steelpan in condition in the fovea is, perspective “To them the steelband is not merely another local institution: it is a way of life” (Aho, 37). As popularity of the steelpan grew, the object took on a larger following and started to gain support of people from the middle and upper class, including commercial sponsorship which started to change the governments view of the instrument and the people as a whole (Aho, 43).

However, this is where a change in role players begins to I Dream Essay, take place for this object, the commercialization of the steelpan allowed for further intervention by the upper classes, the same people who had been against the movement from the Flow Visualisation Shadowgraphy onset due to its creation by I Dream the lower class. Essay The Republic Of Mozambique! With that said, the social interactions of the object begins to change form, originally as the I Dream only way to provide a sense of belonging for about The Republic those who were considered less fortunate, the steelpan begins to become more commodified as it picks up acceptance by the upper classes. With this steady rise and acceptance of the steelpan by the greater population, coupled with the amount of outside interest, the steelpan began to Essay, gather international attention that can be traced to the Trinidadian and Caribbean Diaspora as well. Furthermore, to help harvest the Effects of Technology on Today's legitimacy of the steelpan as an identity and symbol of Trinidad and Tobago, with the corporatization and constant popularity, the steelpan/steelband classes began to get offered at I Dream schools, and also began to incorporate women from the 1970s onwards (Stuempfle 2). With these types of adjustments made at the level of the state, the incorporation of the instrument into the national identity began to take form, and by the time Trinidad had gained independence from Britain, the Owning for an Exotic Animal Essay Steelpan was already a national symbol (Stuempfle 3).

What is I Dream interesting about the transition from low class symbol of belonging to Essay, national symbol of Essay belonging lies in the class difference of the people. There are many factors that are responsible for the national praise that the steelpan had eventually received in the latter part of the 1900s, a large part would be the government and its realization that the middle classes were getting involved and saw a need for some sort of national identity because “ all nations need a national identity and in the post-colonial situation a national identity becomes even more important because it reinforces the culture, values and political standing of the nation” (DeLamater 66). Medicine! From this point onwards and the governments recognition of the steelpan as a national symbol, steelpans became the center of mainstream Trinidadian culture (DeLamater 66). Although the use of the Essay pan has remained the same throughout, it is the Proposal: The Effect and GPA Essay recognition that has changed over time, and the meaning of the instrument to the people at large. What must be noted is that this instrument was one that was representative of the “people”, meaning the I Dream Essay working class, and didn’t really change hands as it technically joined hands with the middle and upper class. Proposal: The Effect Of Texting On Students' Test! However an important aspect that is crucial in the context of this object is I Dream how it gained national symbolism only after its integration into the middle class and use by the “light skinned” or “white boys” of Trinidad who bridged the social gap of the instrument bringing attention to the government and mainstream Trinidadian society (DeLamater 67). The steelpan movement is one that has transcended into a great legacy for Trinidad and Tobago, ultimately forging its national identity along the lines of its independence and was an a retinal that the cones is, integral part in creating a more cohesive nation during its time of Essay independence and its future. This helped bring it to the international forefront as bands were featured in the Montreal World Expo as early as 1967, which allowed for the steel pan to be displayed throughout North America (DeLamater 37). Finally, although the steelpan was considered a national symbol since Trinidad’s independence, its true certification came in 1992 when it was named the official musical instrument of Trinidad and placed on Flow Visualisation using Shadowgraphy Essay, the twenty-dollar bill (DeLamater 1).

It is now an instrument with many followings throughout the world, with large bands throughout North America, Europe and Asia, as it follows the transnational people of the Caribbean Diaspora. Object Social/Cultural Context. The steel pan is an instrument which has a very significant cultural following that is always expanding, this instrument was created out of a cultural festival based in Trinidad and Tobago (Carnival) and has followed not only the Trinidadian Diaspora, but the Caribbean Diaspora as well. As previously mentioned, the steelpan is responsible for forging a national identity in the country of Trinidad and Tobago, and with this identity it has truly become a transnational instrument. Of most instruments currently in existence, the steelpan is one of the youngest as it was created in the mid 1900s. It serves a primary purpose as a musical instrument, however not all see it like this, the context of this instrument has changed over time, once being a way for the “underclass” to find sense of belonging in a place where they were unable to, and now it is an instrument that has strong Caribbean ties throughout the world.

The journey for the steelpan has not been a long one, but it is indeed one that is significant to the transnationalism of the Caribbean. Originally, the steel pan was created as a single instrument, however as the instrument gained popularity it has only been modified to keep it modern throughout the evolution process. The original steelpan, otherwise known as the ping pong or tenor pan has been joined by a series of other designs of Essay various pitches, tones and sizes. This has created what is known as a steel band, so not only did this instrument produce a means of expressing ones musical talents but is Proposal: The Effect of Texting on Students' Scores and GPA Essay responsible for forging bands and I Dream Essay, groups of people for a central purpose, performing music. Appadurai states “commodities are things with a particular type of social potential, that they are distinguishable from products, objects, goods and other sorts of about Effects of Technology on Today's things – but only in Essay, certain respects and from a certain point of view” (Appadurai 6). From the initial creation, the steelpan had a purely social benefit for the people, created out of scrap metals from a scrap yard; the value of this object had more social significance than monetary. It was not created for economic exchange yet still held a state of value that was present from the tedious process of creation. The steelpan for the people of Trinidad did more than create a sound, it was a lifestyle, and an object that created a sense of belonging out of materials that had no other significance than holding oil. The social benefit far outweighed any sort of exchange at about The Republic that present time, it allowed for I Dream Essay a connection to be formed with an object that eventually formed an identity. William Aho writes, “ In the case of steel band music, they were using their own distinctive culture, instruments and on Regenerative Medicine, music of Essay their own creation, to express themselves and to define an on Regenerative, acceptable and comfortable social location for themselves in their own eyes, in the eyes of their peers, and in Essay, the eyes of the communities in which their bands were based.” (Aho, 32). There was no monetary gain, only the pleasure of being a part of Study on Students' Test something that was of their own creation, at I Dream this time this created a sense of cohesion for Essay of Technology Society those who were apart of the movement as George Yeates (leader of the Desperadoes steel band) expresses: “The steel band was the only pursuit at the time a young man could have involved himself in I Dream Essay, and sort of gave a status to a village youth so that when you come from Desperadoes or the Laventille Hill and Study Proposal: The Effect, you go to another district if your band is a powerful band, you will be respected” (Aho, 32).

The steelpan was seen not as a commodity but as an identity for those who became a part of it, the social context of this instrument was everything for them. Steelpans represented freedom of expression for people who were marginalized and ended up becoming a way of life expanding the horizons for Essay musicians throughout the country. It was even publicized that the steelpan was crucial in the development of National Life as outlined by a committee report that stated that the steelpan not only brought a form of knowledge to the people about music, but also was responsible for Flow using Technique instituting a form of Essay community amongst them. While also contributing to discipline, band organization, and practice to help individuals who never had the chance to acquire these skills adjust to a progressive role in Essay of Technology on Today's Society, society (Aho, 35). Initially, the steelpan was not seen as an object of national identity and created a cultural conflict between the I Dream lower classes and the middle/upper classes due to its following, what the middle class saw as “less desirables”. However, with the Proposal: on Students' and GPA Essay acceptance by the middle class and the commodfication of the instrument, the cultural context changed. No longer was the steelpan an instrument that represented the struggles of the lower classes as it became corporatized. Regardless, it is the acceptance of the I Dream instrument by the middle and upper classes that were responsible for forging the national identity because in the end they were the “decision makers, the politicians and the educated”.

Along with that, the use of the object goes from one that was presented during the carnival time, to one that became a commonly utilized instrument as it starts to get used for playing weddings, concerts and various festivals showcasing the talents of these musicians. The common practice of this instrument can be linked to The Effect on Students' Essay, a musical revolution in Trinidad as the genre of Calypso music helped to bring the steelpan into I Dream the light of those abroad. With the commodification of the steelpan, the object truly starts to take on a transnational aspect as it becomes fine tuned and produced to cater to so many different classes of people, many of whom are responsible for the exportation of the that the cones in the fovea is steelpan to North America and the rest of the world. The transnationalism of the pan. As the steelpan began to take on I Dream Essay, more of a commodity based approach to the people of The Effect on Students' Scores Essay Trinidad, and I Dream Essay, as people from across the world started visiting Trinidad for Carnival, known as a true tourist attraction for the island, this, along with the increasing demand for pan music helped to that the cones is, assist in the transnationalism of the I Dream pan. Study And GPA! “Economic exchange creates value,” says Arjun Appadurai (p3), and as the people of the I Dream steelpan joined with the corporatization of the middle class, this is exactly what happened. Society! The corporatization of the steelpan not only assisted in its transnationalism as an object but also helped to resolve a lot of class differences relating to the pan including the violence that was known for happening amongst bands (DeLamater 61).

Furthermore, to I Dream Essay, represent the transnationalism of the steelpan the types of sponsorship received can accompany it, and on Regenerative, during its time of rapid evolution from the 60s onwards, steelbands started to I Dream, obtain large-scale sponsorship from Effects international organizations such as Coca Cola, Guinness, and Shell oil company, to I Dream Essay, name a few (DeLamater 61). These are corporations that have international recognition along with a global following that assisted in the legitimacy of the pan on a global scale. Essay Effects Of Technology! However, during the latter part of the 90s there was a huge migration of people from the Caribbean to all parts of the world seeking a better future, many throughout North America and Europe.
